Over the July 4 weekend this year, storms knocked out power to roughly 320,000 DTE customers at the peak, and some waited five days to get it back (Planet Detroit, July 6, 2026). The same storms that fill a sump pit are the ones that cut the power that runs the pump. That is the single most Michigan-specific fact about sump pumps, and it is why this guide prices the backup alongside the pump instead of treating it as an accessory.

The homes that need one usually do not have one

Sump pumps and perimeter drain tile only became standard in Michigan construction in the 1960s and 70s. In the communities that top our Basement Risk Index, most of the housing predates that line entirely: 88 percent of Grosse Pointe homes were built before 1960, 80 percent in Hamtramck, 78 percent in Detroit and Ferndale, 77 percent in Eastpointe, and 76 percent in Wyandotte (U.S. Census ACS 2020-2024). Those basements were built to drain through clay tile that is now 70 to 100 years old, on soil that holds water against the foundation. When that original tile clogs or collapses, a sump system is usually the retrofit that takes over its job.

Why the battery is part of the job here

DTE's outage record is public and it is not flattering. A third-party audit ordered by state regulators found DTE's restoration times worse than average among comparable utilities, with about 45 percent of its customers on aging 4.8-kilovolt circuits (Liberty Consulting audit, reported September 2024). In 2023, roughly 45 percent of DTE customers sat through outages of eight hours or more, and the February 2023 ice storm cut power to about 630,000 DTE customers at once, the largest outage in the company's history (WDET, February 2023). DTE says 2025 was its most reliable year in about two decades, and the outage credit is now $42 a day, but a credit does not pump water.

Eight hours without power during a wet storm is exactly the window in which a pit overflows. If the pump protects a finished basement, price the battery backup as part of the install, not as a maybe-later. A water-powered backup is the cheaper alternative where municipal water pressure allows it, with no battery to replace.

Plan on replacing it

A submersible sump pump lasts about 7 to 10 years in normal use, pedestal models somewhat longer (Bob Vila and Michigan Basements, accessed July 2026). Batteries age faster, 3 to 5 years. Test the system before storm season: lift the float or pour a bucket of water in the pit and watch it cycle, then unplug the primary and confirm the backup takes over. When a sump pump is the wrong fix

A sump system manages groundwater. If the water arrives with a smell, comes up the floor drain, or shows up when it rains hard regardless of the water table, the problem is likely the sewer, and the fix is a backwater valve, a different job at a different price. This distinction matters most in the metro's combined-sewer communities. Detroit's own Basement Backup Protection Program installed both devices, sump pumps included, at no cost to homeowners in 11 flood-prone neighborhoods, though applications are closed as of July 2026 pending new funding (DWSD).
